How long have you been teaching?
This will be my third year. I taught first grade for two years in Las Vegas.
What makes HA special to you?
The entire Highline community, from school staff to parents and students, has made this school special from the moment I first stepped through its doors. There is evidence of our common mission both in and outside of the classrooms. Coming to Highline has also allowed me appreciate the professionalism and passion of a vibrant and devoted staff. I’m so excited to be serving this amazing community!
Teaching Philosophy
“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” (John Donne, Meditation XVII)
Our connections to one another and our world define us: in school, I believe my students and I must work together to build a community that provides support and lifelong learning. I believe that providing students with meaningful learning experiences, encouraging connections between disciplines, and engaging students in inquiry-based instruction will promote lifelong curiosity. I believe that a core understanding of reading and writing will allow my students to soar in all aspects of their education, and that holding my students to standards of integrity, respect, kindness, and character will encourage personal growth and positive interpersonal relationships.
Favorite Student Story
One day, I introduced a unit on rocks to my first graders. I taught the students to use magnifying glasses, sifters, and other tools. The next morning, nearly every single student came up to me with rocks they had found at home, each with their own special story. One student had the idea to make a Rock Lab with all the scientific tools we had in the classroom, and students had a blast sorting and working with all the rocks. It was so incredible to see a room filled with the buzz of true curiosity!
