Volunteer at Highline

As a parent and community founded school, we rely heavily upon parental partnerships to ensure our success. While we are not a parent-run school, we are a parent-involved school. In addition to requiring a parent commitment of hours, we also encourage parents to serve as thinking partners and leadership colleagues in shaping and implementing our vision. Parents serve on our Board of Directors, accountability committee, and hiring committee, and provide constant feedback to the school about its success and areas of needed improvement.

Use the links to the left to help find out what you can do to not only meet your required hours, but also to continue the outstanding tradition of parental involvement at Highline!

By enrolling a child at Highline Academy Charter School, parents/guardians have chosen to participate in a unique education experience that actively involves both parents and students. Our school was established based on the belief that parents/guardians are an important element in a child's education and that parental/guardian involvement is necessary for the success of the school.

  1. Parents or guardians of Highline Academy Charter School students will commit 40 volunteer hours per family per year or 15 hours for single parent families.

  2. Volunteer hours must be executed as service to the school and the students, and thus do not have a price tag and cannot be “paid out” monetarily.

  3. Opportunities exist to fulfill volunteer hours at home. Please check with the office for these opportunities.

  4. Volunteers who have not undergone a DPS background check will not be left alone with students. In addition, non-parent/guardian volunteers must undergo a DPS background check prior to volunteering in the building.

  5. All volunteers are required to disclose any criminal record they might have.

  6. Volunteers will be utilized for non-instructional purposes only.

  7. Volunteers must follow all procedures set forth in the Family Volunteer Handbook.

  8. All information gained by volunteers while on site performing volunteer hours is strictly confidential. This means, for instance, if you witness a student behavioral incident while volunteering on the playground, you are not permitted to discuss the incident in a manner that would betray the student’s privacy rights (see FERPA, above).

Parents will be asked to sign a contract indicating their willingness to make the volunteer commitment, as well as other commitments to support their child(ren)’s academic success at the school
