Friends of HIghline

There are a lot of things to say about the benefits of living in Colorado, one of which is school choice. The fact that you have chosen Highline Academy is not something we take lightly. At Highline we work everyday to fulfill our mission to foster a diverse and equitable community of youth and adults striving together for academic, personal and civic excellence.

Since opening its doors, Highline Academy has been an extremely cost-effective school, operating almost solely from per-pupil funding provided by Denver Public Schools (DPS). For this reason, DPS cutbacks are particularly challenging for our school. Highline’s Administration and Board already have taken key steps to cut costs, increase revenue, and leverage available reserve funds to protect our programs. Still, forecasts indicate that DPS budget cuts may become the norm for the foreseeable future. Financial security in the years ahead requires that Highline broaden its sources of support beyond per-pupil funding.

While our finances remain strong and stable, never before have the financial needs for Highline Academy been greater and never have the stakes been higher to reform public education and address the educational crisis in Denver.

Highline’s Administration and Board have identified several areas in need of extra support from our community:

1) Classroom Budgets – did you know each teacher has a classroom budget of only $100?

2) Technology –  incorporate more 21st century technology into classrooms

3) Library – grow our resources

4) Specials – music, art, and gym would benefit from additional supplies

5) Athletics – grow our after school athletics program

6) Scholarships – to help those in need of school supplies, uniforms, kindergarten tuition, and field trips

We're excited to announce a new partnership that expands the ways you can support Highline Academy, recently named by 5280 Magazine as "one of Denver's Top Public Elementary Schools."

The Community First Foundation in Denver runs a website for Colorado nonprofits (including charter schools) called GivingFirst.org, and the Foundation pays all credit card fees for donations made through the site. This means 100% of your gift will go to Highline.

1. To make a one-time gift, log onto www.givingfirst.org/HighlineAcademy and click the "Donate Now" button. The minimum donation amount is $10.

3. One-time gifts are great. Recurring gifts are even better. Highline has just launched a new monthly giving program called "Friends of Highline." The money raised through this program will go directly for classroom support, helping to purchase supplemental materials and library books and to fund teaching assistants and the like. For as little as $10 a month, you can become a Friend of Highline. Just go to www.givingfirst.org/HighlineAcademy and sign up for a recurring gift. Please note "Friends of Highline" under special instructions.

There are many ways your tax-deductible gift can be earmarked! When you make a donation to Highline Academy through GivingFirst.org you can specify how you would like your gift used under "Special Instructions." Gifts can go to Friends of Highline noted above, to support general operations, to sponsor a child in need at Highline, or to assist with upgrades to the facility design of our new facility. With a barebones capital construction budget, our dreams remain big as our needs are great!

Thank you for your consideration! Please feel free to share this information with anyone who is interested in supporting educational reform -- and a great school committed to striving together for academic, personal and civic excellence!
